Treatment of Nail and Foot Skin Fungal Infections – Our Approach
Nail and foot skin fungal infections are common conditions caused by various types of fungi, such as dermatophytes, yeasts, or molds. They often develop due to:
• Wearing non-breathable footwear,
• Contact with contaminated surfaces, such as swimming pools,
• A weakened immune system,
• Neglecting foot hygiene or excessive sweating.
Treatment Approaches
We offer two effective approaches: conventional and holistic.
Conventional Approach
1. Laboratory Diagnosis – We collect a sample from the infected nail or skin and send it for a fungal culture or PCR test. The cost in a private laboratory is £120, but this test can also be done for free through your GP.
2. Health Assessment – Once results are available, a doctor will evaluate your overall health through blood tests, focusing on liver and kidney function.
3. Oral Antifungal Therapy – If there are no contraindications, the doctor may prescribe a six-month course of oral antifungal medication.
Advantages of oral antifungal therapy:
• Fast-acting – the medication targets all infected areas.
• High effectiveness for deep-seated infections.
Disadvantages of oral antifungal therapy:
• Potential strain on the liver and kidneys.
• Possible side effects, such as stomach pain, nausea, or allergic reactions.
• Requires regular monitoring of overall health.
Holistic Approach
1. Dietary Changes – Eliminating sugar and reducing carbohydrate intake, which feed fungal growth.
2. Supplementation – Taking natural remedies specifically tailored to fight fungal infections.
3. Duration – This approach takes longer but avoids harmful side effects to the body.
The Key to Success
Regardless of the chosen approach, regular cleaning of infected nail fragments in our clinic and the use of professionally recommended antifungal products are essential for effective treatment. These products must be tailored to the patient’s health condition, skin state, and type of infection. Regular rotation of antifungal products is crucial as fungi can quickly develop resistance.
Duration of Treatment
Fungal infection treatment can take 1-2 years and, unfortunately, is not always fully successful. However, with the right therapy and professional support, we significantly increase the chances of recovery.
